Switchboard Upgrades
Switchboard Upgrade Maitland
The age of your board decides more about a switchboard upgrade Maitland than anything on a price list. It sets who is legally allowed to open it, how long your power is off, and what the whole thing costs. The detail that decides all three sits behind the fuses rather than on the front of the box, so we take the cover off and identify it before quoting rather than on the day with your power already off. That matters more here than in most towns, because the pre-1980 river core is where the ceramic boards and the asbestos backing panels both are, and a job that looks routine from the street is often neither.
The quote costs you nothing and there is no call-out fee, including the visit to open the board and work out what is behind it. You pay us for the work itself and nobody else pays us anything, so the board we quote is the one your house needs rather than the one that earns a referral.
Get Your Board Priced
Tell us the age of the property and what the board looks like: ceramic fuses, breakers, whether anything on it is a safety switch. That is usually enough for us to price it.
What we do
Fuse Box Replacement: What We Take Out, What Goes Back
If your board still runs ceramic rewireable fuses, it is protecting your cable and not you, and that is the first thing we check when we lift the cover. A fuse melts when a circuit is overloaded, which stops the wiring inside your walls overheating. But the current that flows to earth through a person touching a live conductor is far below the level that melts fuse wire, so in the fault that actually kills someone, a ceramic fuse does nothing at all.
What we put back splits that job in two. Circuit breakers take the overload and short circuit side, which is the job your fuses were already doing. Alongside them go safety switches, which are the devices that act on a person rather than on a cable. So we are not selling you a tidier-looking enclosure. We are adding a protective function your original board was never built to provide, and how many of those devices your board needs is most of what decides the price.
Why We Replace The Board Rather Than Repair It
It is worth knowing why before you weigh up a second quote. On a modern board, one failed breaker is a five-minute swap and we will do exactly that. On a ceramic board there is no compliant way to patch the missing protection back in one circuit at a time, so the honest answer is the whole board.

What Happens On The Day
A straightforward board change is a single day from power off to certificate. This is how we run it.
-
Tell us what you have
A photo of the open board and the rough age of the house is usually enough for us to say whether you are looking at a repair, a full change, or supply-side work on top. Two minutes on the phone.
-
We open the board and fix the price
We attend, check what is landing on the board, identify the backing panel, look at the condition of your consumer mains and count what actually needs protecting. You get a fixed price and a date, and that price holds unless you change what you have asked for.
-
Power off, old board out, new board in
Plan your day around it: supply is off for most of it on a single-phase change. Longer if we are removing an asbestos panel or waiting on a network disconnection for the meter.
-
Testing, labelling, paperwork
We test every circuit, label the schedule so the next tradesperson in your roof is not guessing, and issue your Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. Keep it with the schedule. Your insurer and your conveyancer will both ask for it.
Before we come to your Maitland address, find the meter box key if yours is locked and clear whatever has accumulated in front of the board. A photo of the open board sent through beforehand is genuinely useful, because it tells us the fuse type and the number of ways before we arrive. If you rent, we need the owner's go-ahead, since a board change is not a tenant's call to make.

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
Open the door and look at what is protecting the circuits. Ceramic holders with wire across them are rewireable fuses, still behind the door of plenty of Maitland houses, and a board running those has no shock protection on it at all. Black or grey switches with a test button are safety switches, which is what you want. Breakers with no test button anywhere protect the cable and not you. A photo of the open board is usually enough for us to tell you which of the three you have before anyone comes out.
How much does it cost to upgrade a switchboard?
There is no honest single number for a switchboard upgrade Maitland, because two things that decide it are not visible from the front of the box: how many circuits actually need their own protective device, and what the board is screwed to. A pre-1987 backing panel is very often asbestos, which is licensed removal work and the usual reason a job runs past a day. We open the board, establish both, and give you a fixed price that holds from there. A board with eight circuits and a timber panel behind it is a straightforward day. Twenty circuits and a panel that has to come out under licence is a different job entirely, and that gap is most of the range you will be quoted around town.
What do you need from me before you can price it?
A photo of the open board, the approximate age of the Maitland house, and whether you know of any circuits that trip. If you are adding a charger, air conditioning or a new kitchen, tell us that too, because it changes how many ways we need to leave spare.
How long will my power be off?
Most of the working day for a standard single-phase change, which is what the majority of Maitland houses are on. Plan on being without power from morning to mid-afternoon. Add time if we are removing an asbestos panel, if the meter has to be disconnected or relocated, or if we find your consumer mains need replacing at the same time. We give you the realistic figure when we quote, not the optimistic one.
Am I legally required to upgrade my switchboard?
No law forces a switchboard upgrade Maitland on an existing compliant installation, and most boards here are left alone for years on that basis. It becomes unavoidable the moment you add new circuits, whether that is an EV charger, air conditioning or a new sub-circuit, because we cannot certify new work on a board that does not meet the current standard.
Whether Your Meter Box Has To Be Replaced Or Moved
Your meter box and your switchboard are not the same thing, which is usually why two Maitland quotes for the same job are not comparable. The meter box holds the meter and the service fuse. The switchboard holds the protective devices for the circuits in your house. On older Maitland properties the two often sit in one combined enclosure, so we check yours before quoting. Where they are combined, replacing the board can mean replacing the entire box.
When The Meter Box Has To Move
We move one when you are building over the wall it sits on, when it has ended up unreachable behind a deck or an extension, or when it has corroded past the point of being worth keeping. Moving it changes where supply enters your property, and that makes it supply-side work, so we bring in an accredited Level 2 provider to disconnect and reconnect. We tell you that at quote stage, not at 10am with your power off.
While the board is open we will also fit surge protection, and we will recommend it rather than insist on it. If your supply comes in on overhead lines, that device is the difference between a nearby strike costing you a switchboard and costing you every connected thing in the house.
If We Find An Asbestos Panel Behind Your Board
Boards installed before 1987 commonly sit on asbestos-backed panels, and the older Maitland housing has plenty of them. Zelemite, Lebah and Miscolite are the brands we turn up most. They read as a dark brown or black rigid sheet and give off a tar smell when cut or drilled, which is precisely why we identify the backing panel before any drill goes near it.
We cannot break one up or drill it, and neither can any other general electrician. Removal is licensed asbestos work under SafeWork NSW: the panel comes out intact under controlled conditions and goes to a licensed disposal facility. It is the single most common reason a board change runs past one day, so we price it in from the start rather than discovering it halfway through and handing you a variation.
Locally the odds are not in your favour. If your place is part of the pre-1980 stock that makes up so much of Maitland, we treat the panel as asbestos until we have positively identified it as something else. That assumption costs you nothing, and it is the reason the panel stays intact instead of being drilled into during what looked like a routine job.
What Changes The Price Of Your Upgrade
Circuit count moves your price more than anything else, because every circuit that needs its own protective device is another module in the board. After that we are pricing on whether your supply is single or three phase, whether there is an asbestos panel, whether the meter or service fuse has to be disconnected, whether the meter is being relocated, the condition of the wiring where it lands on the board, and how much room we have to work in.
The one that catches you out is scope escalation, so we go looking for it deliberately. Taking the cover off can reveal consumer mains that are undersized or perished for the load you now run, which turns a switchboard job into supply-side Level 2 work as well. We would much rather tell you that with the cover off and your price still open than after you have committed to a number.
When A Maitland Board Needs Replacing
Ring us if you have any of these: ceramic rewireable fuses, no safety switches anywhere on the board, breakers that are warm to touch, repeated tripping with no obvious cause, or visible scorching around the terminals. Every one of those is a reason we want to open your board rather than guess at a price down the phone.
A burning smell or scorch marks are not a scheduling conversation. Isolate at the main switch and call us straight away. That is heat at a connection, and connections that have started heating do not settle back down on their own.
Most Maitland upgrades we do were never booked as one. Someone rang about a charger, an air conditioner or a new kitchen circuit, and the board could not carry it. We will not hang new work off a non-compliant board and certify it, so the upgrade arrives attached to the job you actually wanted. If that is you, say what the new circuit is when you ring and we will quote both halves together rather than sending you two prices a fortnight apart.
The local conditions a board has to survive
The Hunter River floodplain, and one of the most flood-prone local government areas in NSW. Storm season brings overhead-line surge exposure, summers are hot, and bushfire-prone land is mapped on the semi-rural fringe, which triggers a BAL assessment under AS 3959.

Switchboard Upgrade Questions
Can you sell a house with an old fuse box?
Yes. Nothing in a NSW sale forces you to replace a compliant board first, and plenty of Maitland houses change hands on ceramic fuses. What happens instead is that it comes up in the building inspection, the buyer reads no safety switches as a job they have inherited, and they knock it off your price. Upgrading before you list turns that into a certificate you hand over instead. You pay us for the work and nothing for the quote, and we will tell you honestly if yours is not worth doing before a sale.
Should I change my fuse box to circuit breakers?
Breakers alone are only half of it, and this is the part worth checking before you compare two Maitland quotes. A breaker does what your fuse already did, just resettable, so a quote for breakers alone leaves the board no safer than it was. The part that changes your safety is the safety switches that go in beside them, and a quote that does not itemise how many is not a quote you can compare. Ours says how many devices and which circuits they cover.
Are safety switches mandatory in NSW?
On new circuits and new installations, yes, and that is what catches people out. There is no rule forcing you to retrofit them to a compliant older board you are leaving alone. The moment we add a circuit, the new work has to comply, and we will not hang it off a board that cannot carry the protection. So the trigger is rarely the board itself. It is the air conditioner, the charger or the new kitchen you were actually ringing us about, and it is how most Maitland upgrades start.
What if the panel behind my board is asbestos?
We stop, tell you before anything else happens, and price it as licensed removal under SafeWork NSW. Given the age of a lot of Maitland housing we expect it rather than hope against it, and it is the most common reason a board change runs past a single day, so we identify the panel at quote stage rather than handing you a variation halfway through. You are not asked to do anything except leave it alone until we get there.
Will my insurer ask about the switchboard?
Insurers can ask about the electrical installation after a fire claim, and on the older Maitland boards a total absence of safety switch protection is a known risk factor. Some insurers will load the premium on a ceramic-fuse board, and a few decline to cover it at all, so it is worth asking yours before you renew. What you get from us is the Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work, which is the document showing the installed work was tested and certified. Keep it with the circuit schedule, because that pair is what an insurer or a buyer asks to see.
What happens if the job turns out to need Level 2 work?
We tell you before we start, not after. If your consumer mains are undersized or perished, or the meter has to come off, that part is supply-side work and we coordinate an accredited Level 2 provider to do it. You get one price covering both halves and one point of contact.
Who Picks Up
Talk To The Person Opening Your Board
The one who answers the phone is the one who lifts your cover off and counts what is behind it. Not a scheduler taking a message. So you can ask about fuse types, spare ways and what a backing panel looks like and get an answer on the spot.
It matters on a board change more than most jobs, because the price turns on what is inside the box rather than what is written on it. A description over the phone gets you a range. Someone who has already worked out whether Maitland stock of that age tends to be Zelemite gets you a number you can plan around.

Get A Price For Your Switchboard
A photo of your open board and the age of the house is enough for us to tell you whether you are facing a repair, a full change, or supply-side work on top. You get a fixed price, a date for the power to go off, and a straight read on whether that backing panel is likely to be asbestos. If the board is scorched, warm or smells like it is burning, call rather than write. The phone is answered at any hour, and a burning board is not something we schedule for a weekday.
