Who we are
Who You Are Calling In Maitland
We do residential and light commercial electrical work right across the Maitland City Council area: switchboard upgrades, supply-side Level 2 work, rewiring, charger and appliance circuits, lighting, safety switches, smoke alarms and emergency fault finding. We answer the phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week, we quote free, and we issue you a certificate for everything we install. This page sets out what our licence lets us do for you, where it stops, and what you should be asking any electrician before you book one.
What Our Licence Lets Us Do For You
NSW recognises three electrician credentials and they are not interchangeable, which is worth knowing because it decides who is actually allowed to quote you. An Electrical Contractor Licence permits a business to contract, advertise, quote and sign off work. That is the one we hold, and it is what lets us give you a price and certify the result. A Qualified Supervisor Certificate permits the holder to supervise and perform work but not to contract or advertise for it. An Electrician Tradesperson Certificate permits work under supervision.
Behind all three sits a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician, a NSW Certificate of Proficiency, and a minimum of twelve months of post-qualification experience.
Under the Home Building Act 1989 a licence number has to appear on advertising, stationery and signage, alongside the licensee name and a business phone number. So ask for it before you book the work, ours included. Ring us and we will give you the number on the call, and NSW Fair Trading lets you check it online in about a minute.
Where Our Licence Stops And Level 2 Starts
Level 2 is a separate accreditation on top of a contractor licence, and in this area Ausgrid issues and audits it rather than Fair Trading. It authorises work on the connection between the network and your property: consumer mains, service fuses, service lines, live meter connections, supply-side defect rectification and the point of attachment on a private pole.
We do not hold that accreditation and we do not pretend otherwise, which matters because a general electrician cannot legally complete or certify that work however experienced they are. When your job turns out to need it, and switchboard upgrades and supply upgrades often do, we bring in an accredited provider, scope both halves together and stay your single point of contact through to the certificate. You get one price and one person to ring. Before you engage anyone for supply-side work, ask for the ASP number and confirm it with Ausgrid directly.
The Certificate We Give You
Electrical wiring work requires a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work under the Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2017, and we issue you one as a matter of course rather than on request. It goes to you, to Building Commission NSW and to the electricity distributor within seven days of us completing the compliance testing. Minor like-for-like repairs such as swapping a single power point or switch may not always require one. From 1 July 2026 we lodge CCEWs digitally through the BCNSW eCert portal as the paper process is phased out, which changes how we submit it rather than what you receive.
Keep it somewhere you can find it. That certificate is the document that matters when you sell, when you claim on insurance, and when the next tradesperson in your roof needs to know what was done and by whom.
Two Kinds Of Maitland Property, Two Kinds Of Quote
Maitland splits fairly cleanly, and which side you are on changes how we price your job. In the Victorian and Federation-era stock of the older river core we test before we quote, because what we find is the problems of that era: ceramic rewireable fuses, boards with no RCD protection, asbestos-backed meter panels from before 1987, and perished VIR and rubber-sheathed cabling we cannot repair or extend. Lighting circuits from that period frequently have no earth conductor at all. That is why we check earth continuity before we fit you a safety switch rather than after.
The post-1980 growth estates were built to a compliant standard with newer supply, and three phase is more often already at the property. Our work there tends to be additive: charger circuits, downlight layouts, extra power points and outdoor circuits. The question we are answering for you is how much spare capacity your board has, not whether it survives being opened.
On the acreage fringe we quote a third way again. Private power poles are yours rather than the network's, so the repair and the liability sit with you. Long submain runs to sheds are priced on voltage drop rather than on load, which means a bigger conductor than the current rating suggests. Pump circuits need motor-rated protection sized for starting current, not the standard breaker that trips every time the motor kicks in.
What Is Not Legal To Do Yourself
In NSW all fixed and hardwired electrical wiring work requires a licence, regardless of the size or value of the job, and there is no minor-works threshold. Replacing a light globe or starter like for like, plugging in a portable appliance and replacing a plug-in fuse are the exceptions. Everything else is why you are on this page, including the extra power point that looks like a twenty-minute job.
The penalties sit in the Home Building Act 1989: up to $22,000 for an individual and $110,000 for a company for carrying out unlicensed electrical wiring work. Beyond the fine, work done that way has no CCEW behind it, which is a problem when you sell and a much larger problem when you claim. We would rather quote you the small job than be called out to the aftermath of it.
How To Get Us To Your Maitland Property
Ring us on (02) 4072 8575, or use the enquiry form if you are on shift and cannot talk. Either way we want the age of the property, what it is doing now, and what your board looks like. If you have a burning smell, a sparking fitting or a power point that is hot to touch, isolate at the main switch and call us instead. That one does not belong in a form.
