LED Downlight Installation in Maitland LED Downlight Installation

LED Downlight Installation Maitland

We convert halogen downlights to LED and install new downlights in ceilings that have never had them. Most of what we do is a conversion rather than a new layout, and it is worth doing for a reason beyond the power bill. The halogens we take out run at around 300°C inside your ceiling. LED downlight installation Maitland pays for itself less on the power bill than on that: the fittings going back run cool enough that your insulation can go back where it belongs, which is where most of your heating and cooling money is actually lost.

Volume is what moves this price. We charge per fitting and the rate drops steeply with the count, so a whole-house conversion works out far cheaper per light than four in a kitchen. The other variable is what is above your ceiling: insulation that has to be cleared for non IC-rated fittings adds time that a straight swap does not.

Plan Your Ceiling

Tell us how many downlights, which rooms, the ceiling type and whether you want anything dimmable. A photo of a fitting from below helps.

What we do

Converting Your Halogens To LED

A 50W halogen downlight draws around ten times what an equivalent LED does, so a house with 30 of them is running 1500W with the lights on and about 150W after we convert it. Over the hours those lights are actually used, that is a genuine change to your bill rather than a marketing figure. It is also the least interesting benefit of the job.

The heat those fittings throw is also why your insulation looks the way it does up there. A halogen needs clearance from anything combustible, so whoever installed them cut the batts back around every fitting, and on a house with thirty lights that is thirty gaps in the layer you paid for. Nobody ever goes back and closes them. We do it as part of the conversion, which is why the house often ends up easier to heat rather than only cheaper to light.

Retrofit Lamp Or Whole New Fitting?

We quote you both ways rather than picking for you, and the questions below set out what each one leaves you with. What decides it on most Maitland ceilings is the insulation. Where there is a decent layer up there and the existing fittings are not rated to sit under it, the cheaper route buys you a lamp and leaves you the hole, so we will say so before you choose it.

Start to finish

A Conversion, Room By Room

A whole-house conversion is usually one day. Here is what it looks like from your side.

  1. Tell us how many, and what ceiling

Number of existing downlights, which rooms, ceiling type, and whether you want any of it dimmable. A photo of an existing fitting from below helps us identify what is up there.

  2. We check the roof space and quote

We look at what fittings and transformers you have, whether there is insulation and whether it has been cut back, and what the ceiling will take. You get a fixed price per light, cheaper by volume, with retrofit and full-replacement options priced separately.

  3. Conversion day

Old fittings out, IC-rated LED units in, dimmers replaced where you are dimming. Lighting circuits are off while we work and your power points stay live. Insulation is laid back over the fittings before we close up.

  4. Set, test, certify

We set the colour temperature with you in the room, check every light and dimmer through its range, test the circuits and issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.

Count the lights you want converted and check whether your ceiling has insulation over them, as that decides which fittings can go in. If you have dimmers, tell us the make, because most old dimmers will not drive LEDs properly and that is the usual cause of flicker. Clear access to the manhole if you have one.

Before you book

Before You Book A Conversion

Do you need an electrician to replace LED downlights?

It depends what you mean by replace, and the distinction is worth knowing before you pay anyone. Changing a lamp that plugs into an existing fitting is not electrical work and you can do it. Changing the fitting itself is, because the driver or transformer and the cable behind it have to suit what goes in. If what you are pulling out in your Maitland house comes away with wiring attached, it is our job.

Can I install LED downlights myself?

No, not the fittings. Any hardwired work in Australia is licensed, and cutting new holes in a ceiling adds the question of what is above them. Downlights sit in the same cavity as the wiring, the insulation and sometimes the ceiling battens, and the clearances are the whole reason the old halogens were a fire risk in the first place.

How much do electricians charge per downlight?

We price LED downlight installation Maitland per fitting, and the rate drops steeply with the count, because most of the work is getting into the roof space rather than the fitting itself. So a whole-house conversion costs far less per light than four in a kitchen. Retrofit lamps and full fitting replacement are quoted separately so you can see the difference. Quotes are free, there is no call-out fee, and you pay us for the work. We make nothing on the fittings, so the one we suggest is the one that suits your ceiling.

What do you need from me to quote it?

How many downlights and in which rooms, the ceiling type of the Maitland property, whether you want any of them dimmable, and a photo of one existing fitting from below. If you know there is insulation up there, say so, because it decides which fittings can go in.

How long does it take?

LED downlight installation Maitland is a day for a typical whole-house conversion, and a couple of hours for a single room. Add time for the lath and plaster, pressed metal or raked ceilings common in older housing here, and for dimmer replacements where the existing ones are not LED compatible.

IC-Rated Fittings And Your Ceiling Insulation

IC-rated means a fitting is approved for direct contact with insulation, and it is the single specification worth insisting on. Fit anything else and you have paid to remove the best-known problem with halogens while keeping the one that costs you more.

So we fit IC or IC-4 rated units and lay the batts back over the top before we close up. A Maitland roof cavity gets hot enough in February that the difference is worth having, and it is the half of the job you cannot see from underneath.

If your ceiling has no insulation at all it is still worth specifying IC-rated fittings, because it costs very little extra now and means insulation can be installed later without anyone having to come back and cut around your lights. We raise it at quote stage for exactly that reason.

Why Your LED Downlights Flicker

Flickering, buzzing and lights that will not dim to a low level are nearly always a dimmer problem rather than a light problem, and it is the most common complaint we are called out to after someone else's conversion. Old dimmers were built for the resistive load of a halogen lamp; an LED draws a fraction of that and behaves differently electrically, so the dimmer cannot regulate it properly.

The replacement you want is a trailing-edge dimmer, and that is a term worth knowing because it is printed on the box. Older dimmers are leading-edge, which is what a halogen wanted and what an LED cannot cope with. We check the dimmer and the fittings together and match them, rather than swapping lamps and hoping.

Tell us which rooms you want dimmable when you enquire. It is the difference between one visit and two, and between paying for a dimmer once and paying for lamps you end up returning. We see this most in the Maitland houses that had halogens retrofitted in the 2000s, where the dimmers are original and were never designed to drive anything but a filament.

How Many Downlights, And What Maitland Ceilings Take

We mark the layout on your ceiling with you before anything is cut, room by room, against what each room is actually used for. A kitchen wants light on the bench rather than on the floor in the middle. A living room wants the lamps doing the work and the downlights filling in behind them. That conversation takes twenty minutes and it is the part of the job you cannot change afterwards without patching plaster.

Colour temperature is the other decision, and it changes the feel of a room more than the number of lights does. Most fittings now let us set it at installation, so we do it with you standing in the room rather than choosing on your behalf. Open-plan spaces get planned as one, because a change of temperature partway across a room reads as a mistake even to someone who could not name what is wrong.

What Your Ceiling Construction Allows

Ceiling type sets what is possible. In the newer Maitland estates, plasterboard ceilings and accessible roof spaces make conversions quick. In the older housing, lath and plaster, pressed metal and raked ceilings all need planning before the day. Some will not take a standard cut-in fitting at all, and surface-mounted LED units are the answer there.

The climate we fit for

Maitland runs a mean maximum of about 24.5 degrees across the year, with hot, humid summers. It is why so much of what we fit is about moving heat: fans, cool-running fittings, and roof cavities that sit far hotter than the rooms below them.

LED Downlight Questions

Can you replace halogen downlights with LEDs?

Yes, and it is most of what we do across Maitland. The heat is the reason, and it is covered above. The practical question is whether your existing holes suit the new fittings: 90mm is the common cut-out and most LED units are made to it, so a straight swap usually leaves the ceiling untouched. Where the old cut-outs are an odd size we use a fitting with a wider trim rather than patching your ceiling.

Can I just put LED lamps in my existing fittings?

Sometimes, and it is the cheapest route. But the existing transformer stays in your ceiling and it is the component most likely to fail next, and the old fitting is generally not rated for insulation contact, so you keep the hole in your insulation. Replacing the fitting costs more and fixes both. We quote you each way and tell you which one we would do in our own house.

Why do my LED downlights flicker?

The dimmer, nearly always, and the reason is above. What is worth knowing is the giveaway: one room misbehaving while another from the same job is fine points at the dimmer, and every light on the circuit flickering together points at the supply or a loose connection instead. The second one we want to look at sooner.

Do all LED downlights need a driver?

Yes, though on an integrated fitting it is built in and you never see it. That is the practical difference between an integrated unit and a retrofit lamp: the integrated fitting comes with a driver matched to it, while a retrofit lamp has to work with whatever transformer is already sitting in your ceiling. Mismatched pairs are where flicker and early failure come from.

Can insulation go over LED downlights in a Maitland ceiling?

Over IC-rated fittings, yes, and it is the specification worth insisting on. If your insulation was cut back around the old halogens, ask whoever quotes you whether they are laying it back over afterwards or leaving it as they found it. It is a real part of the job and the part most often missing from a cheap price, because it means someone in your roof space rather than only under it.

How many downlights does a room need?

Fewer than you would think, and this is the decision people get wrong in the same direction every time. As a guide, one every 1.2 to 1.5 metres in a living area, adjusted for ceiling height and what the room is for. A uniform grid is quick to install and gives you flat glary light. We lay the design out with you before anything is cut, and taking four lights out of a plan is free now and expensive later.

What colour temperature should I choose?

Warm white around 3000K for bedrooms and living areas, cool white at 4000K to 5000K for kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and Maitland garages that double as a workshop. Do not mix temperatures within one open-plan space, because a change partway across a room reads as a mistake even to someone who could not say why. Many fittings are selectable at installation and we set them with you standing in the room.

Who Picks Up

Ask About Your Ceiling First

You get the electrician who will be in your roof space, which means you can ask what is up there before booking. Insulation type, batt depth, existing cut-outs and the condition of the old fittings all change the job, and in Maitland the answer varies more by decade than by suburb.

It matters because almost everything that makes this job awkward is above the plasterboard rather than below it. A ceiling with a party wall running through the cavity, ducting where you wanted a light, or a joist exactly where the plan puts a cut-out is a conversation worth having on the phone rather than a surprise on the day.
