EV Charger Installation
EV Charger Installation Maitland
Buy the charger before anyone looks at your switchboard and you can end up with a unit sitting in the garage and a board that will not carry it. Ausgrid built this network expecting each house to draw four to five kilowatts on average, and a home charger on its own wants seven. So EV charger installation Maitland starts at your switchboard, not at the box. Most people here end up with a 7kW single-phase charger on a dedicated 32A circuit, and you want to know which side of that you are on before the unit arrives rather than after.
Ring us before you order the unit and the conversation costs you nothing. We come out anywhere in Maitland, look at the board and the parking spot and quote the whole job, and there is no call-out fee for that visit whatever you decide afterwards. You pay us for the installation. Nobody who sells cars or chargers pays us anything, which is why we will tell you a 22kW unit is wasted on your house rather than fitting it.
Check Your Supply First
Give us the car, the parking spot, the rough distance to your switchboard, and a photo of the board with the cover off.
What we do
Single Phase Or Three Phase: Check Before You Buy
We check two things before you order anything in Maitland: what your supply can deliver, and what your car can actually accept. They are different limits and the lower one wins. Most Maitland homes are single phase, and most cars sold here cap their onboard charger well below what three phase could feed them, so the expensive unit is frequently throttled by the car rather than the house.
Whether you already have three phase depends a good deal on when your street was built. The newer estates out toward Thornton and Lochinvar were laid in with three phase available far more often than the older core, so the same charger is frequently a cleaner job there and a supply conversation here. Either way we check the meter box before quoting rather than assuming from the address.
Whether 7kW Is Already Enough For You
Before you pay to convert, work out what you actually need. A 7kW charger puts back roughly 40 to 45 kilometres of range an hour, so an overnight charge covers a daily drive most people in the Hunter would call long. If that is your week, three phase buys you speed you will be asleep for. Tell us your daily distance and we will say plainly which side of that line you are on.
Whether Your House Has The Load Spare
A 32A charger is a substantial continuous load on top of an oven, air conditioning and a hot water system, so we look at your supply capacity and your existing demand rather than assuming there is room. Where there is not, dynamic load management lets your charger throttle back when the house is drawing hard, and that is often cheaper than upgrading your supply.

How Your Install Runs
Most chargers are a half-day job. The half hour before it is what makes it go smoothly.
-
Tell us the car and the parking spot
Make and model, which tells us the onboard charger limit, plus where the car parks and roughly how far that is from the board. If you have already bought a charger, tell us the model as well.
-
We check supply, mains and board
Single or three phase, spare capacity, board condition and whether your consumer mains can carry the extra continuous load. You get a fixed price, and if the board has to be upgraded first you get both numbers together rather than one at a time.
-
Install day
Dedicated circuit run to the parking spot, cable sized for the distance, charger mounted, correct RCD fitted at the board. Power is off briefly while we work in the board, not for the whole visit, and most Maitland installs are done inside a day.
-
Commissioning, notification, certificate
We test and commission the charger, plug your car in and watch it draw before we leave, lodge the Ausgrid notification, and issue the Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. If a load management condition applies to your street, the charger is configured for it on the day.
Know which car you are charging and where you park it, and have a photo of your switchboard and your meter. Those two things answer most of the question before we arrive. If you have solar, the inverter details matter as well, since they decide whether charging off your own generation is realistic or just a brochure claim.

Can a normal electrician install an EV charger?
A licensed electrician can do the EV charger installation Maitland side of it. What often comes with it is not general work: if your switchboard has no spare capacity, or your consumer mains are undersized for another dedicated circuit, that part is supply-side and needs Level 2 accreditation. We scope that half at the same time and bring in an accredited provider for it, so the job does not get halfway through and stop while you find a second trade.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade before installing an EV charger?
Sometimes, and it is the thing that changes the price most. A charger is a dedicated circuit with its own protection, so it needs a spare way on the board and a board capable of carrying it. On the ceramic fuse boards still behind plenty of Maitland meter boxes the answer is always yes, because we will not certify a new circuit hung off a board that cannot protect it. We check yours before quoting so the number includes everything.
How much should it cost to install an EV charger?
The charger is the predictable part. What moves the price is the distance from your switchboard to where the car parks, whether that run is through a roof space or under a driveway, and whether the board has room for the circuit. A charger on the wall shared with the meter box is a different job from one at the back of a detached garage. The site check and the quote are free, there is no call-out fee, and you pay us for the installation rather than a commission to whoever sold you the car.
What do you need from me before you can quote?
Where the car parks at your Maitland address, where your switchboard is, and a photo of the open board. If you have already bought a charger tell us the make and the kilowatt rating, and if you have solar, say so, because it changes which unit is worth having.
How long does the installation take?
EV charger installation Maitland is half a day to a day on most driveways, where the board has room and the car parks near it. A long cable run, a driveway crossing or a switchboard upgrade alongside it adds to that, and we tell you which of those apply when we quote rather than on the day.
The Dedicated Circuit And The Right RCD
Your charger goes on its own circuit from the board, never shared and never on an existing power point circuit, because it draws near its maximum for hours at a time. We size the cable for the run length as well as the continuous load, and on a long run to a detached garage that means a larger conductor than the current rating alone would suggest.
Which RCD Your Charger Needs
This is where corners get cut, so it is worth knowing what you are paying for. DC leakage from a car charger can blind an ordinary Type AC device, so AS/NZS 3000 and the charger manufacturers require either a Type B RCD or a Type A used with the charger's own built-in DC leakage detection. We fit whichever your unit specifies. If a quote you are comparing does not mention the RCD type at all, ask them. That is the line item being left out.
Where the charger is mounted matters more than it looks. Wall-mounted inside a garage is the simplest version. A carport or an open driveway means the unit needs a weatherproof enclosure with an IP rating suited to the position, and the cable protected along its whole run rather than at the ends. We look at where your car actually parks and where the cable will land, because a charger installed on the wrong wall means you drag a lead across the car every night for a decade.
Ausgrid Notification For Maitland Installs
Anything drawing more than 20 amps a phase has to be notified to Ausgrid, and for a Maitland install that is every charger worth fitting. Notified is the word that matters. You are not applying for permission and nobody can turn you down, so a charger install is never waiting on an approval that might not come. We lodge it as part of the job rather than leaving it with you, and we lodge it early, because it sometimes comes back with a condition on your charging current and finding that out before we run the circuit is what stops the charger being commissioned twice.
Where a condition does apply to your address, we configure the charger for it on the day and show you what it means in practice. A current limit usually costs you nothing you will feel, because the constraint bites at the hour your car is already full.
What Your Meter Has To Do With The Tariff
Some retailers offer EV-specific tariffs with cheaper overnight rates, and those can need a compatible meter. We tell you what your metering can support at quote stage so you can talk to your retailer with actual information, and we coordinate an accredited provider if a meter change is what you decide on.
Choosing A Charger, And Charging From Your Solar
The first fork is tethered or untethered, and most driveways take either. Tethered units come with the cable attached and are quicker to use day to day. Untethered take any cable and suit households with two different cars. Smart chargers add scheduling, app control and the ability to run on off-peak rates, and they are what makes an EV tariff worth having. We will give you a view on which suits your driveway and your driving, and we will fit whatever you have bought.
Charging Off Your Own Solar In Maitland
Tell us at quote stage if you have solar and want to charge from it, which a good share of households here now do. It changes the charger we recommend and it puts a current transformer in the board while we are already in there, which is the difference between a fitting and a return visit.
Whatever you choose, the outcome on our side is the same: a dedicated circuit sized for the run, the RCD type your unit requires, the network notified, and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work at the end of it. That is the same on every Maitland install we do, on a tethered unit in a garage or a smart charger under a carport.

EV Charger Questions
Should I get a 3.6kW or a 7kW charger?
7kW for almost everyone with a single-phase supply, because it is the practical ceiling of what single phase gives you and it charges roughly twice as fast for very little extra install cost. 3.6kW makes sense if your switchboard genuinely cannot support more, or if you drive short distances and the car sits home all night anyway. 22kW needs three phase, which most Maitland houses do not have, so it is a supply upgrade question before it is a charger question.
Can I just plug my car into a normal power point?
You can, and it is the slowest way to do it. The cable that came with the car draws around 2kW from a standard 10 amp socket, which is fine to top up but adds very little range overnight. The real issue is that it puts a continuous heavy load through a socket and a circuit that were never designed for hours of it, which matters on the older wiring in a lot of Maitland housing. If you are going to charge at home every night, a dedicated circuit is the safe version of what you are already doing.
How much does Bunnings charge to install an EV charger?
A retailer sells the unit at a fixed price and subcontracts the installation, and the installation is where the variability actually lives. The thing a fixed price cannot know is your cable run, your board capacity and whether your mains carry it. That is why those quotes are commonly revised after someone attends. We would rather look first and give you a number that holds.
Can I charge my car from my solar?
Yes, with a charger that supports it. The units worth having can throttle their draw to match what your panels are actually exporting, so the car takes surplus rather than pulling from the grid. It only works if the car is home in daylight, so it suits working from home far better than a commute down the M1. Tell us you have solar before we specify the unit, because it narrows the choice.
Is there an EV rebate in NSW?
NSW has run incentives on both vehicles and home charging and the terms have changed more than once. We are not going to quote a figure or a scheme name here that might have closed by the time you read it. Check the current position on the NSW Government energy site before you buy, and if a rebate applies to the charger rather than the car, it usually has conditions about who installs it.
Can I take the charger with me if I move?
The unit unbolts, so physically yes. What does not move is the circuit, the cable run and the labour, which is most of what you paid for. Removing it also leaves a dead circuit at the old house that should be made safe properly rather than left capped in a wall. Worth weighing before you spend up on a premium unit for a house you are not staying in.
Who Picks Up
Talk To The Person Running The Circuit
You can ask about the cable route, the mounting position and which RCD your unit takes, and get the answer from whoever will actually be doing it. We install these across Maitland most weeks.
Mounting position is the decision people regret and the one nobody asks about. Get it wrong and you drag a lead over the bonnet every night for a decade. On the Maitland places with a detached garage it decides the cable run as well, so it is worth two minutes on the phone before we quote it.

Phone
Worth a call before you order a charger, not after. It takes about five minutes.
-
Form
Better if you are at work, on a site where you cannot talk, or you would rather write the problem down than explain it on the phone.
-
Email
Use this when you have something to attach: a photo of the board, a defect notice, a plan, a quote you want read.
Maitland Driveways And Garages We Wire
We install home chargers across Maitland and the surrounding Hunter, in the older suburbs where the board usually needs looking at first and the newer estates where it rarely does.

Get Your Charger Priced
Your car model, where it parks and a photo of your open switchboard is enough to price it. You get a fixed price, an install date, which RCD your unit requires, and a clear answer on whether your supply needs anything doing first. Worth having that before the charger arrives rather than after.
